What is link weight?

What is link weight?

Posted 13 May 2009

Backlinks are arguably the most important factor of ranking well in search engines. Its just as important to know to realise that not all links are the same. They are apportioned different weights based on many factors. Consequently, its not just the quantity of incoming links your website has, but the quality too.

How do I find out link weight?

When looking at a website with a view in trying to get a link from it, its important to review the website first, potentially saving you waste time.  Although simplified (true link weight is decided by complex algorithms that are different from one search engine to another), link weight is determined by the following factors:

Anchor Text Relevance

When it comes to the actual link pointing to your website, its important that the text included within the link is relevant to your website. This text is known as 'anchor text.'

Based around this topic, here is an example of relevant anchor text:

Why is this good? Because it is telling search engines that for more information on this topic, you should go to that website. Its almost like saying "This is a better website for this information, go here."

This factor also becomes important when linking to other websites from your own, as you can leak PageRank if you link to too many external websites.

Contextual Relevance

As well as the link itself, the web page your link is on should also be talking about the topic too. This gives the link added relevance, and so greater link weight. Even better is if the whole website is related to the topic matter, for maximum relevancy.

Internal Linking

You may only be concerned with only how well your optimised your website is, but you should in fact care about any website that is linking to you too. As well having Contextual Relevancy, the website in question should have a good internal linking structure. The web page your link is on should be linked to from many other pages, with relevant (you guessed it) anchor text too.

Ultimately, the better optimised the website is, the more link weight passed onto you. If the website has many external links which contribute to a high Google PageRank, this is ideal, especially if some of these links are from websites with similar content to your chosen topic.

Helping your own link weight

Contextual relevancy is important for your own website too. When talking about a subject matter, be it a new service or product, try to create more than one page about it. Then, think about internal linking. Make sure you use keyword rich anchor text to show search engines that it is a page of relevance.

You can help to establish any new pages by internally linking to them from established pages with high PageRank. This could be from a Latest News page or similar. Of course, when adding new pages you should also update your Sitemap to speed up the indexing process.
