Google AdSense is an ad serving system that allows website owners
to display, and earn revenue from, ads from customers of the
Google AdWords Pay Per Click
system.
How does it work for the website owner?
AdSense is easy to setup, as it just a case of creating an account
and placing some code into web pages. Ads displayed automatically
update in order to be relevant to the rest of the web page's content.
Colours and styles can be picked in order to compliment the
surrounding content, and website owners can choose to display
graphical or video based ads instead.
The website owner receives a percentage of click through or
impressions revenue. Supplementary revenue can be gained with specific
AdSense functions for dormant domains (US only) and mobile phones.
What does it mean for the user?
If a user is advertising with Google AdWords, they have the option
to advertise on the 'Content Network.' They can pick websites related
to what they are selling to advertise on, with the theory being people
looking at their ads on these websites should be their target company.
Sadly, some website owners produce dubious websites purely to
generate AdSense income which aren't so great for the user. This makes
clicks somewhat less targeted, whilst advertising spend can increase
greatly.
