When users choose to receive a bulk e-mail (such as an
e-newsletter), they are opting in. The key to an opt in email is that
the user has been asked permission. Otherwise, sending a user an email
without their permission would be considered spam, which is illegal.
There are a few different variants of Opt In. These are:
Unconfirmed Opt In
This is typically where a user may fill in a web form and click on
a tickbox to receive an email. There is no action after this,
increasing the chance of a mistake.
Double Opt In
This form of Opting In involves the user confirming the
subscription. This ensures the user is genuinely interested, and
validates their email address. Therefore, using Double Opt In email
addresses for email marketing is the best way of doing so.
The term Opt Out is allowing the user to unsubscribe from mailings.
This is a legal requirement when sending out a marketing email.
