The internet opens up new markets, allowing you to trade online
globally 24/7. However, utilising Google AdWords' Local Business Ads
feature allows you to get the most out of local targeting too.
What are Local Business Ads?
They are Google AdWords ads associated with specific business
locations. The ads appear in:
- Google
- Google Maps
- Content sites with Google Maps
- Google Earth
- Google Network
They display when a searcher types a service and location (e.g.
plumber in London).
What do the Local Business Ads look like?
In conventional search results, you can identify a Local Business
Ad alongside normal AdWords ads because it will have the address under
the ad text. This gives the searcher added incentive to click on the
ad compared to the more general adverts.
An advertiser can pick a specific area range they wish to cover and
Google will look at a) the search term and b) the user's IP address
(which give an idea of location) to deliver your Local Business Ad
when most relevant. This means, if a London based user searched for
'hotels' then there will a bias towards hotels in London.
If a user was on Google Maps, they would get relevant Local
Business Ads alongside or even inside the map. Google Maps doesn't use
the user's IP address.
What are the advantages of Local Business Ads?
By advertising to people closer to your physical location, there is
increased relevancy and therefore a greater chance your ad will be
clicked on. If it is only economically viable for your service to
cover a certain range, Local Business Ads allow you to make the most
out of your advertising spend with as little waste as possible.
If you run a chain of shops, you can create a multiple listing with
a single ad, making it easily manageable and highly targeted.
How do I create a Local Business Ad?
You will first need to create a
Local Business Listing
to show where you are. This becomes what people will see on Google
Maps.
Once the Local Business Listing is activated, you can login to your
AdWords and
follow Google's instructions to create the Local Business Ad.
