Useful tools for Twitter

Useful tools for Twitter

Posted 30 June 2009

Hopefully you have already introduced yourself to the micro-blogging phenomenon that is Twitter. Millions of others have too, and a few clever sorts have invented tools to help us make the most of it.

Below is an overview of - what we could consider - the most useful tools for Twitter users (or 'Twitterers') looking to get the most out of it from an online marketing perspective. We've tried to order them in a way that progresses from beginner tools, to people who really want to milk Twitter for all its worth!

Twitter Patterns

Twitterfeed

If you're not good on the design front, a site like Twitter Patterns allows you to brighten up your Twitter's background design with these downloadable patterns.

Twitpic

Mr. Tweet

This is a popular one, allowing you to share photos through your Twitter account, on your phone or another API program.

Twitteroo

Twitteroo

This neat tool allows you to update your Twitter from your desktop, opposed to logging onto the Twitter website itself. It also shortens any URLs for you (essential to keep in with the character length constraints) and even gives you an audible notification if you've received new tweets.

TweetDeck

TweetDeck

An alternative to Twitteroo is the arguably more well known TweetDeck. It has an advantage of having a special iPod focused layout. It also has a cool trending feature, showing you want your friends are talking about.

TwitterFox

TwitterFox

As the name suggests, this Firefox Add-on allows you to update your Twitter and be notified of your followers' updates without visiting Twitter itself. It loads within Firefox so you can continue on the website you're already on.

Power Twitter

Power Twitter

Another great Firefox Add-on that gives you added features such as trends, Flickr and Youtube links, photo uploading and URL shortening.

Twitterfeed

Twitterfeed

Got a blog? You should have! Make it easy to post entries to your Twitter with this tool that does it for you.

Twiddict

Twiddict

Born out of frustration with Twitters often seen 404 page, this cool tool allows you to save messages that can't currently be posted to Twitter. When Twitter is back up, it is automatically posted for you.

Twitturly

Twitturly

Working as a trending tool for links, with Twitturly you can see the most popular links posted by Twitterers.

Mr. Tweet

Mr. Tweet

Want people to follow you? Of course. This Twitter tool actively finds Twitter users which talk about things similar to you.

Twittertroll

TwitterTroll

This real-time search engine allows you to find new friends/followers who are talking about similar topics to you. Shame its not much to look at...

Just Tweet It

Just Tweet It

Similar to Twittertroll, but a directory instead of a search engine. You add yourself to the website, and take a look at similar users in the same category.

Twellow

Twellow

Intended to be the Yellow Pages of the Twitter world, here you can add yourself to a categorised directory. You can find fellow local users too.

Twitterless

Twitterless

Losing followers? See who has stopped following you on Twitter and when, giving a valuable insight into whether its your content that is the issue.

TwitBlocker

TwitBlocker

Some of your followers a little too talkative? They can remain your followers but be silenced with Twitblocker, it automatically stops showing their Twitterings.

Twitter Grader

Twitter Grader

For the egomaniacs out there, you can see how how you rank in Twitter.

Twuffer

Twuffer

Got lots of things you want to talk about? Don't tweet them all at once! You can use a scheduler like Twuffer to post tweets on days that you plan out.

Twist

Twist

Twitter's own search not helpful enough for you? You can view and compare trends by day or month with Twist.

TweetBeep

TweetBeep

For organisations serious about leveraging the marketing benefits of Twitter, TweetBeep allows you to get alerts when fellow Twitterers talk about you, your products or services. Its essentially an online press cutting service similar to Google Alerts.

Strawpoll

Strawpoll

A tool that's been reinvented for Twitter, it allows you to engage fellow Twitterers by creating your own polls. Neat.

TwitterBerry

TwitterBerry

Blackberry users have their own Twitter client, allowing them to post on their Twitter accounts easily.

Twittervision

Twittervision

Not especially useful, but very cool! See where people are Twittering from around the World.
