In 2002, the Electronic Commerce (EC Directive) Regulations 2002
came into force affecting the majority of commercial websites. It may
look like it only affects online retailers, but if you are providing a
service, the likelihood is that it applies to you.
You can
read the regulations in full on the Office of Public Sector
Information website.
What do I need to do?
You should look to provide the following as a minimum on your
website:
The company name (and trading
name). |
The company registration number. |
The company VAT number. |
An email address (not just an
contact form). |
A registered address. |
Clear pricing (VAT and Delivery
costs) |
The registration number of any
member or trade organisations |
It is also worth noting that the
Companies Act 2006 also requires the place of registration should
also be on your website. An example of what you could have is:
Your Company Limited is a company registered in
England and Wales, company number 1234567 |
There are also the
Distance Selling Regulations to bear in mind, which contain other
requirements for those selling online to consumers.
