Page speed to become ranking factor on Google?

Page speed to become ranking factor on Google?

Posted 17 November 2009

Back in June, we pondered if the launch of Google's Page Speed tool would result in the speed of the website influencing it's search engine rankings. We justifiably argued, at least if your website is down a lot, it will affect your indexing. Now we have been given further hints that page speed could become a serious factor.

The rumour

Fresh rumours on page speed have been circulated thanks to a WebProNews interview with Google employee Matt Cutts. Matt said;

"Historically, we haven't had to use it in our search rankings, but a lot of people within Google think that the web should be fast. It should be a good experience, and so it's sort of fair to say that if you're a fast site, maybe you should get a little bit of a bonus. If you really have an awfully slow site, then maybe users don't want that as much."

Of course, that isn't confirmation. However, with page speed directly affecting the user experience, it's easy to believe the relevancy obsessed Google will include page speed in it's algorithm at some point, perhaps as a result of the next generation Google Caffeine project.

From Google's perspective, if it were to display 10 slow loading website's in it's search results, it reflects badly on them. It would be easy to understand the less IT literate of users blaming Google instead of the slow loading website hosts.

How should I prepare?

As said, a fast loading website is good for the user. This should be of particular importance to you if you are selling online. People have a huge range of choice, so don't give them excuse to leave for one of your competitors.

Ensure your website doesn't needlessly use large images or JavaScript coding. When renewing your hosting, quiz the company about their downtime figures. With many hosting companies claim 99.9% uptime, yours shouldn't be any different.

To help analyse your website for problems, ensure you meet Page Speed guidelines and use tools such as  Google's Page Speed or Yahoo's YSlow (requires Mozilla Firefox).
