So, I logged onto
Google Webmasters yesterday to see that you could try the 'new
look' layout. They don't call it a Beta as such, but as with their
recent AdWords interface update, you can switch back to the old
version if you're a 'set in my ways' kind of person!
Is it an improvement?
From a marketing point of view, it's a real bugbear to see Google
still doesn't seem to know what to call the system. The title tag
suggests its called 'Google Webmaster Central,' but wait, it then says
to log in to 'Google Webmaster Tools.' Could we have some continuity?
Things turn more positive when you see the new look. It was
incredibly dated beforehand, and is much improved, if not quite as
cutting edge as the lovely looking AdWords interface.
Are there any more features?
Yes. Also, the tools you actually want to use are much easier to
find. The system was initially launched in 2006, being focused
primarily on submitting sitemaps. Things were added over time, and
this used to show. Now everything is more intuitive and features
include:
Messaging interface
Report spam feature
Crawler access definition and testing
HTML tag suggestions
There are a host of features which have simply been re-named, or
put in a different place. Fortunately, it only takes a couple of
minutes to get used to the new layout.
Have any features been removed?
I'm afraid so. The features lost are:
Enhance 404 pages
Enhanced image search
No content information listed (file type or encoding
information)
Making use of their YouTube acquisition, Google has put a little
video together if you're more of a visual person!
