Microsoft officially launched its new Bing search engine on the 3rd
of June 2009. With a number of changes under the Live brand, it became
clear Live Search needed to be re-branded.
What does Bing offer?
No, not sarcastic replies from the Friends cast member, Bing
instead promises a lot of new features intended to encourage people
away from the likes of Google which dominates the search engine market
by some margin.
Visually, you get a nice new background photo each day. More
importantly, search results provide an innovative extended preview.
You also get related links to images, news and similar searches
Media search
Worthy additions are within the images and video search results.
You can, for example, select to view close up photos or even select
just black and white ones.
Movies can be previewed by hovering over thumbnails, whilst you can
be specific whilst searching to include video length, size and
resolution.
Instant answers
When searching on Bing for commonly asked questions, search results
will include a response from the Encarta encyclopaedia. Items like
sport scores are also listed as well plane fight statuses, math
calculations, restaurant reviews, traffic information and much more.
xRank
There is a new 'xRank' feature that ranks popular celebrities and
others under the media spot light by popularity. You can see a
biography of them (from Wikipedia) as well as images and videos.
Whether it will convert many from Google remains to be seen, the
momentum it has will be hard to stop. However, Bing has many promising
features beyond simply copying Google's own. You can start using it at
www.bing.com.
