Get more followers on Twitter

Increase your Twitter exposure

Posted 30 October 2009

It has been a while since we visited the much talked topic of getting more followers on Twitter, so we thought it was time to re-visit the subject. Rather than focusing on tactics to get more followers, we're going back to basics.

The Rules

It's important to be strict with how you use your Twitter. One wrong move can result in you losing followers you have fought to get on board. The Top 5 Mistakes to make are:

1. Self Promotion

Whatever you do, don't constantly promote your products or services. If it doesn't add value, people will soon get bored of it. Only work in your marketing message if it is related to your tweets. Better yet, include any sales pitch on your website which you have linked to from your related tweet.

2. Boring Tweets

The phrase "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all" has never been so apt for Twitter. Don't feel pressurised to update every day, especially if you are resorting to simply posting old news. You can use tweet tracking software to see what works and what doesn't.

3. Lack of Communication

How many of your followers do you speak to? Don't take them for granted, re-tweet any interesting posts they make and interact! Asking questions is a great way of getting things going, building a relationship could result in you gaining more exposure within their own network.

4. Auto Responding

This is an all too often used marketing tool that lacks the personal touch. If someone follows you, send them a genuine, personal Direct Message instead.

5. Writing a Novel

Part of the appeal of Twitter is its 140 character limit. Many people seem to think if they run out of space, it's fine to continue on the subject by starting a fresh tweet. However, this clogs up your followers' home page, which might annoy them. There is even an application to 'silence' followers because of it!

Be succinct and lead followers to a an URL that expands on your point. You can free up some space by using one of the many websites out there that shortens your URLs.

Timing is Everything

Using a product such as Tweetburner to track the effectiveness of your tweets is worthwhile. It allows you to experiment with response rates when posting the same tweet at different times of day, for example.

If you're having a particularly creative day, there is no need to put it all on Twitter straight away. Instead, use scheduling software to plan out future tweets. Twuffer is a good example.

If you wish to save some time, kill two birds with one stone by using a product like Twitterfeed. It work like an RSS Feed, allowing your blog entries to be fed straight to your Twitter.

In Conclusion

Remember to always view your Twitter account from a follower's perspective. Don't expect to sell from the off, building rapport and trust first is important.

People can only follow what they know exists. Make sure your Twitter profile is linked to throughout your other online marketing mediums. Get them involved with Twitter-only competitions or special offers. This can get people re-tweeting and bring in even more followers.

Good luck!
