Get more followers on Twitter

Posted 04 June 2009

Twitter has got a great reputation because it of one word: celebrity. You've got everyone from Paris Hilton to Stephen Fry 'Twittering.' When headlines such as  "So and So has reached 1,000,000 followers" appeared it didn't take businesses long to see what all the fuss what about.

The truth is, getting thousands of followers may massage the ego, but it isn't necessarily good for your business.

Give time to the little guys

The problem with being 'friends' with established people on Twitter is that, with their hundreds of thousands of followers, many are too swamped to start any kind of conversation with you.

Less popular doesn't mean less useful. People with less followers are more likely to see what you're tweeting, have more to reply to your tweets and consequently are the sort more likely to retweet (link to your content).

Take Twittering seriously

Its all very well attracting new followers, but keeping them is a whole different challenge. You should be Twittering often, maybe not daily but enough to keep whatever you're saying fresh.

It sounds obvious, but ensure everything you type is actually interesting. This promotes sharing, and if an established Twitter member does retweet your ramblings, you could have quite a few extra followers just from bringing something genuinely new and insightful to the table.

Try not to stray too far from what your Twitter's theme is all about. Even if you think its interesting, ask yourself if it is relevant to current followers. Don't risk losing any previously dedicated followers, start a new Twitter account if you still have the urge!

Its important to nail all of these factors before you put effort into attracting more followers, otherwise you'll just be wasting your time!

Establish a Reputation

OK, I've made you wait long enough! You want to know how to get more Twitter followers...

The first stage to getting more followers on Twitter is by having continuity throughout your online marketing. Twitter is a form of "micro-blogging" and is limited. Do you have a supporting blog where readers can find out more information? Does your website reflect content on your Twitter, perhaps going into more detail and allowing people to comment as with your blog?

There may be many people who would follow you on Twitter, but simply aren't aware you have one! If you have an offline or online newsletter, make sure you it includes a snippet on what your Twitter is about, encouraging them to follow up.

Communicate

Twitter isn't a one-way process with sole aim of driving traffic to your website. Ensure you follow others and engage with them (obviously, weed out any spammers beforehand). Did you read an interesting Twiittering? Then reply to it, making it engaging. Other followers might notice your replies, find them interesting and then check out your profile.

Although frowned upon by a few, don't be shy about following people. It may not be cool to be following more than are following you, but it demonstrates you want to learn more. The bigger the network, the better you can improve your own Twitter account. There's also no harm retweeting other people's content, as they may end of reciprocating once you show a form of interaction.

It's nice to be nice!

If someone follows you, make sure you thank them. You have the option to send a private to message any of your followers, so send a friendly coupe of paragraphs. Be sure to give them a link to your website to subscribe to your newsletter if they're interested in similarly themed stories and news. Try to make the message personal, letting them know there is a person behind your 130 character Twitterings enhances loyalty.

When a follower isn't a follower

Don't assume everyone that follows you thinks you're great. There are a lot self-promoters, spammers or automated feed accounts around on Twitter. Be sure to check everyone who follows you, it might save time barking up the wrong tree with them.

Concentrate only on the followers who appear to be in your target market, or in a similar field of work. These are the responsive ones who are most likely to retweet your Twitter entries, and might even end up buying from you.
