Do include files harm SEO?

Do include files harm SEO?

Posted 01 January 2009

Many large websites use include files. It makes it the organisation and updating of repetitive chunks of code far easier. An example of this might be a sub-menu which many webmasters have at the bottom of the pages, but with internal linking being important for Search Engine Optimisation, are include files anti-SEO?

What is an include file?

An include file (sometimes also called a 'header' file as its place in the Head tags of HTML) allows you to place code in an external file and draw it either at server or client side into a webpage. So, it loads information into a page from an external file. This reduces file size and allows easier management of websites.

Should I use an include file?

There is no harm to SEO when using server-side include files because the pages are effectively put together before a search engine spider would read it. The spider effectively sees what a user would.

Client-side include files certainly aren't good for SEO though. Using JavaScript, and often used for Frames based layouts, search engine spiders do not read any of the information

Can I test which type is used on my website?

If you aren't web savvy, you can simply type your domain into Google with 'site:' beforehand.

Google Site Command

Frames pages are so poorly indexed that you will probably not have more than a few pages listed, however, a properly indexed site will have the majority of pages listed.

Frames page based layouts aren't very accessible for the same reason, and is therefore another argument for not using them in the first place.

What is internal linking?

Internal linking helps search engine spiders to find and therefore index your website's sub-pages, allowing them to show up in search results. A technique called 'Page Rank Sculpting ' involves intelligent internal linking where you can use established pages to pass on their Page Rank to lesser sub-pages you want to increase the ranking of.

For menus used on every page on your website, an include file can be used so that any update is made across the entire site without the need to edit individual pages.
