Getting links to your website is very important, as it will help
your search engine rankings greatly. In an ideal world, the best way
to get links is for other websites to naturally link to you. This
might be down to a well written article they like, or they're saying
thanks as a happy customer of yours. Problem is, you aren't in control
of these links and they may take a long time to develop.
For businesses looking to make their website's profitable, this
method can't be the only way of getting links. It will take too long
to establish good rankings, and time costs money!
Of course, people have been pro-active and found ways of generating
incoming links to their websites. One technique is commenting on
blogs...
What makes a good blog to comment on?
As with any website, you should be looking at how well optimised a
blog is in order to see if it will provide any benefit to you. Look to
see if the blog has a decent PageRank
and ensure it is related to what you are selling.
Its all very well getting a link, but for it to be considered
important by search engines, both the
anchor text and surrounding
content of the page should be contextual to your website.
Ideally, a blog should be listed on its own domain. There are a lot
of blogs on free hosting websites which don't carry the same
link 'weight'.
Are there disadvantages with commenting on blogs?
So, blogs allow you to build topic related incoming links with
seconds. Unfortunately, this is one of those "if it sounds too good to
be true, it usually is" moments. The problem with it being so easy to
build incoming links with blogs is that the method is abused.
Consequently, the algorithms that search engines use give very little
weight to comment based links. Because of the abuse, they realise that
most outgoing links are often not very topical and lack of relevancy
is what the likes of Google hates. Brush up on
Google's Quality Guidelines if you need clarification!
Wise website owners don't like to
leak PageRank. This is done by linking to loads of external
websites. Understandably then, allowing people to spam their blogs
with comments/links is something they want to crack down. And they do.
Most website blogs are produced using software from the likes of
WordPress and TypePad. Some of these have built in code to give the
'no follow' tag to any link within the comments area. These two words
tell search engines to not visit the website, rending your efforts
pointless.
So, commenting on blogs may be quick and easy, but many are a
complete and utter waste of time. So, the question is....
Should I bother commenting on blogs for SEO purposes?
The answer is yes, but do so intelligently. Check the blogs are 'do
follow' for starters. As mentioned above, ensure the blog entry is
actually related to what you do. Search engines pick up on the
surrounding text and it boosts the 'weight' of the link you produce.
 |
If you use the Mozilla browser from Firefox, you can use
this handy Add-On which shows up 'no follow' links when you're on
a web page. |
Don't just comment on interesting blog entries though, try and find
the writer's contact details and send them a more personal comment.
They might appreciate it, and include you (and your website) in a
follow up article.
Forgetting the linking benefit, whether it is a 'no follow' or not,
your link is still visible. If your comment is a good one, you still
may generate visitors to your website from inquisitive readers.
