When recently changing a domain name for one of our clients, the
huge task of changing everything associated with the website began.
One step was the website's hit tracking, provided by Google's
Analytics software.
Whilst the client's website used the same content and structure, we were
concerned the use of
301 redirects
from the old domain might not be logged or could create duplicate hits.
Google's View
As far as Google Analytics is concerned, the website domain is
irrelevant. They only care about the web pages themselves. Consequently, you
can leave the same tracking code as supplied by Analytics on your web
pages (if you're still using their old code, it might be an excuse to
upgrade to the latest version)..
Changing your Analytics Profile
Each website tracked on Google Analytics is known as a 'Profile'.
Once logged in, you can select Edit on your Profile overview.

Your Profile Settings page will list the website URL concerned as
well as any set Goals or Filters you have applied.
It's not immediately apparent how to change the website URL, but
you can do so by hitting another Edit link on the top-right of the
page.

Changing your URL name will not affect your hit reporting at all, it's
simply so you maintain continuity.
