First off the blocks to form a relationship with Twitter and
Facebook is Microsoft's Bing search engine. Although a Facebook deal
isn't official yet, it's thought Bing will be showing status updates
in real time in a similar to way what it is already being done with
Twitter (in Beta release). However, the deal is non-exclusive, so
Google and Yahoo are likely to follow suit soon.
Why is this important?
From a users perspective, Twitter's search is very basic, with
search results listed chronologically. By handing over the task to a
search engine like Bing, a more advanced algorithm is used. Now you
can search by relevance, with a pre-dominant ranking factor being how
many followers a user has on Twitter.
Not much is known about the potential Facebook deal, but this is
potentially more interesting as Facebook is a publicly closed website,
requiring a sign up. Together with the Twitter search tool from Bing,
it allows marketers to see trends grow and change on the fly.
Will there be a user backlash?
In the past, Facebook has come a cropper by introducing new terms
that it's users didn't like. This resulted in angry complaints,
causing Facebook to back down with their tail between their legs. The
company won't want to show such naivety again. Instead, Facebook plans
to have additional tools giving users the power to make their status
updates public or not.
How can I ensure my updates are ranked well on Bing?
As mentioned, when it comes to Twitter, the amount of followers is
a factor used to rank updates. If you have many followers, it
demonstrates what you say can be trusted. Not many other details have
been revealed, but naturally relevancy will be important too. This
involves how many keywords are in your update and Twitter account as a
whole. If you are focused on one subject, this shows it's something
you're pretty knowledgeable about.
You can take a look at how Bing ranks Twitter posts now by using
their Beta search tool.
